Zorbas the Greek – Hotel Hilton / Athens / Greece

Categories Destinations, Hotels, Stories4 Comments

Yasou, House & Hotel Magazine loves to be in Greece, not only on the islands. This beautiful Hilton hotel in Athens was -long time ago- the fashionable playground of Jackie “O” and the international crowd in trendy cafes in Kolanoki Square.
At the time, the Hilton was a newer hotel and a very busy location. A few things changed but it still is a great place.

Take a drink at the bar and relax in a sophisticated setting enhanced by snug couches, wooden floors and diffused lighting. I would prefer an aperitif from the wide selection of drinks.

While the years and economy have taken a noticeable toll on Athens, the Hilton has remained a very attractive and well-run property in a nice location. The hotel was entirely remolded a few years ago and the accommodations, staff and amenities are first class.

I would highly recommend the Hilton.

Sure you should have to do a few things in one of my favourite cities legend says, when Athena trumped Poseidon’s proffered well with a gift of an olive tree. The city’s devotion was worth winning. Always famously lively, Athens is again at the cultural fore. Since its pre-Olympics revamp, the city has a bit recreating itself. For visitors, there are plenty of novel pleasures, explore up-and-coming neighborhoods, find a few new galleries and bars, or mix with the city’s cinephiles. That said, Athens’ classic attractions have not faded. You should definetly climb up to see the Acropolis, even in summer. When the sun hits the Acropolis’ high, stony hill it is a perfect day.

For its size, Athens is remarkably low-rise. A good way to get a feel for life at street level is to stroll through Anafiotika, a beautiful neighborhood on the slopes of the Acropolis hill, the masons who built it hailed from the island of Anafi, and were brought here by King Otto I to build his palace. Nestled above Plaka, Athens’ center, and bustling Monastiraki, the old bazaar, Anafiotika seems far removed. There, bougainvilleas splash whitewashed walls and cats stalk sunny paths, evoking the island life the masons left. Beautiful.

Our resto tip:

Not a star restaurant but a fantastic eating experience, the basement taverna on the corner of Sokratous and Theatrou at the bottom of the fruit and vegetable market. There are no menus but you can look around and see what everybody else is eating. It’s almost like a private club,
The wine is always not overpriced and great, it comes sometimes without even asking for it.
The grilled fish eg. psa- ree psee- toe is incredible. We tried everything split pea, with bread, soup and a few other things. Yummy.
Another traditional estiatorio at # 3 Sokratous Street is the brand new Meidani right by the corner of Evripidou Street. Perfect lunch address, great red wines and a very large -fine- menu which includes just about every Greek oven dish you can think of plus bakaliaro me skordalia, podi, and some salads.
Unfortunately it is only open in the daytime. If you are in the mood for a fine air-conditioned restaurant with a large traditional menu and a few interesting entrees that will satisfy you.

Greece is always nice.

Living in style.
